As a national sponsor of the Girls on the Run SoleMates charity running program, Garmin is partnering with this great organization to further their mission and share the stories of the women and men who are “running for a reason.” Runners can sign up for any event — runs, walks, bike rides or triathlons — and raise funds that will support their chosen council of Girls on the Run. I am proud to be running as a SoleMates fundraiser in the Malibu Half Marathon on Saturday, November 9, 2013. I have been passionate about Girls on the Run since I began serving on the board of directors early in 2012 for a new council in northeast Wisconsin. This season I will be a head coach at my former elementary school (Oaklawn), and first site of Girls on the Run in Oshkosh, Wisconsin! Girls on the Run resonates through my soul, and by recognizing my own power and responsibility to young girls in Oshkosh, I am intentionally setting out to raise $1,500 to cover the scholarship need for 10 girls in our program, so that no matter what a girl’s financial status, she can participate in the amazing program of Girls on the Run so she may be empowered one day to do the same.
Due to a long-standing family trip already scheduled, I am running as a SoleMate on November 9, which is the same day my girls will be completing their first 5k. With every mile of my 13.1, I will be thinking of the beautiful, confident and joyful girls in our program. I want to show not only those in Girls on the Run but also those in our community how powerful it can be to nurture our own physical, emotional and spiritual health through running for a cause.
