TechAmerica Europe has delivered a Whitepaper at the Copenhagen COP15 Climate Change Conference, urging delegates to formally acknowledge the vital role of high technology in climate change reduction policy.

Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s President and Chief Operating Officer said: “As the number of vehicles on the road continues to increase, we need to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases and fuel consumption in order to safeguard the environment.

“One of the ways Garmin has tackled this issue is by offering drivers a powerful tool they can use to evaluate their driving habits called ecoRoute™. ecoRoute facilitates behaviour-modification, letting drivers make informed decisions and helps them to choose more fuel efficient routes, which can help drivers save fuel and money.”

The Whitepaper included a case study of Garmin’s ecoRoute™ fuel-saver software, which references a recently commissioned statistical analysis for digital map data provider NAVTEQ, conducted by independent social science specialist NuStats .

Garmin’s ecoRoute software rates driving style in terms of economy and carbon footprint, as well as providing tips on driving efficiency and calculating fuel-efficient routes.

The NAVTEQ/NuStats study found that drivers using a sat nav achieved, on average, a 12 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to drivers without a navigation device.

According to the study, drivers who used a navigation device not only increased their fuel efficiency and saved money, but also reduced equivalent CO2 emissions by 24 percent because of increased fuel efficiency – which equates to nearly one metric ton of pollutants per year.

The NAVTEQ Navigation Benefits study indicated that if all 241 million drivers in the US began to use satellite navigation, it is estimated that 18 billion gallons of fuel per year could be saved, leading to 200 million tons of reduced CO2 emissions - the equivalent of removing over 40 million vehicles from the roads

As part of Garmin’s pledge to continue to innovate and pioneer forward-thinking technologies, ecoRoute™ is a standard feature on all new Garmin devices and is also available as a free download to compatible Garmin navigation devices. To find out more about ecoRoute visit www.garmin.co.uk/ecoroute

Garmin® Announces the AIS 600 for Vessel Tracking and Collision Avoidance

Posted November 17, 2009 | 08:38 AM in Marine , OEM | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, is delighted to announce the AIS 600 – the company’s first AIS transceiver to allow mariners to receive and transmit Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, for identification and avoidance of other vessels at short or long range, in virtually any visibility.

Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales said:  “Motor boat owners and yachtsman alike will benefit from the safety and security the AIS 600 provides.

“With the AIS 600, mariners can rest assured knowing that they have visibility of the boat traffic around them and that they can be seen by other vessels whilst navigating through busy shipping lanes.”

The AIS 600 receives both Class A and Class B signals simultaneously, ensuring that no critical information is lost. In addition, the AIS 600 features a unique built-in Active splitter with ClearTrack™ technology that eliminates the need for two VHF antennas – giving you more space and making installation easy without the need for additional hardware.

The active splitter makes sure that all VHF and AIS communications are sent and received with minimal signal loss or interruption, whilst ClearTrack ensures no disruption of AIS traffic reception, even when the VHF radio is in use.  Garmin is the first manufacturer to bring the unique ClearTrack technology to the AIS market.

Users can make the AIS target’s position appear on their electronic chartplotter and the new black box AIS 600 transceiver is both NMEA 0183 & NMEA 2000 compliant, to allow easily integration into your on-board marine network. Once installed, the AIS 600 provides detailed information including ship identification data, position, course and speed of vessels equipped with an AIS transmitter within range whilst simultaneously transmitting your own vessel’s details to others. There is a Silent Running mode for use when you do not wish to transmit your own position.

When the AIS 600 is integrated with a Garmin chartplotter and VHF radio via NMEA 2000, a DSC call can be initiated directly to any AIS target straight from the chart plotter, by selecting the “call with radio” function.  Mariners may also activate the AIS target which will draw a heading line from the target in the direction of travel, as well as graphic representation of rate and direction of turn.

The AIS 600 has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of £999.99 and will be available in January 2010. For more information on this and other products in the Garmin marine family, visit www.garmin.co.uk.

Garmin® strikes a blow to low bridges everywhere

Posted October 15, 2009 | 04:34 AM in Automotive , OEM | Permalink

The problem of lorries striking low or narrow bridges, causing hold-ups on the road, disruption to train services and costing millions of pounds every year to repair, could be drastically reduced according to the sat nav expert Garmin. It comes after a recent report by the Office of Rail Regulation found that nearly 2000 railway bridges across Britain were hit by vehicles in 2008.

Tregoss Moor NEW 291m 29ch 026

Now Garmin has launched a new version of its sat nav designed specifically for lorry drivers. The nüvi® 465TF is able to help lorry drivers avoid low bridges, narrow lanes and small villages because it can store the truck’s dimensions and help reroute journeys away from restricted areas.

Nuvi465T_HR1

Official figures from Network Rail confirmed that between April 2008 and March 2009, 1725 of their bridges were hit by vehicles with over two thirds of these bridge strikes involving large goods vehicles.

Figures in the ‘National Rail Trends Year Book 2008-2009’ produced by the Office of Rail Regulations showed bridge strikes have increased by more than 61% from just 885 a decade ago to 2285 in 2007. In 2008/9 it saw numbers fall for the first time to 1982 strikes - a decrease of 13.3% from the previous year.
It was also estimated that between April 2008 and March 2009, 119 days were lost due to delays on the rail network due to bridge strikes.  Although this figure includes all delays including freight, passenger journeys accounted for the vast majority of time lost. This figure is however 22% lower than the same period the previous year due to management of the risk by Network Rail.

Nuvi465T_CF_2

Amongst the most hit bridges in 2008 were three in Grantham, Lincolnshire.  The Springfield Road, Harlaxton Road and Barrowby Road bridges were hit more than 65 times in 2008. However, this year the accolade was passed to a bridge over Latchmere Road near Clapham Junction with over 19 bridge strikes in less than three months.

Garmin’s Colin Lee said; "Sat navs play a vital role in the modern truck driver’s life helping to ensure millions of destinations a year are reached safely and quickly. Most sat navs are designed for cars rather than lorries though.  The fact that certain bridges are actually getting a reputation for being hit made us look at how we could provide a better solution to this problem.

Adding; “Our mapping supplier Navteq released its first lorry-specific map this year and we’ve been working hard to integrate the information into our first sat nav for lorry drivers. The nüvi 465TF allows lorry drivers to enter their vehicle’s dimensions, weight and load, and the advanced software will route them away from low bridges, narrow lanes or restricted areas.”

Bridge 56 14.10.05c

In other parts of the country, desperate residents have installed signs to stop lorry drivers getting stuck down narrow roads following sat navs, The 'No HGV' signs have been installed in areas where motorists regularly face delays or where trucks are constantly getting stuck. The signs, some of which have symbols rather than words on them are designed to help non-English speaking drivers.

Road Haulage Association spokesperson Chrys Rampley agreed: "Sat navs are wonderful for drivers in unfamiliar territory but they still need to pay attention to the environment and road signs around them. Foreign drivers are particularly reliant on sat navs but they also need to improve their understanding of the British roads.

Adding; “We welcome advances in new technology and hope the solution from Garmin will help reduce the number of bridge strikes, disruption to the road and rail networks, and help our members navigate safely to their destination.”

A guide to avoiding bridge strikes produced by the Bridge Strike Prevention Group of which both Network Rail and RHA are members can be downloaded from http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/3563.aspx .

For the ultimate in situational awareness, these new radar units also incorporate a Dual Range feature that allows a Garmin network-compatible chartplotter to display two ranges simultaneously, so users can see both close and distant targets on one display.

As with other Garmin radar devices, these new units also support MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) collision avoidance capability, which allows mariners to track the course, speed and predicted closest approach of multiple targets (with optional heading sensor).

Each new four and six-foot open-array scanner features automatic and manual sensitivity, tuning controls, including gain, sea clutter and rain clutter – which allows users to spend less time tuning the unit and more time navigating.

Mariners will also benefit as these units transmit data over the Garmin Marine Network™, a plug-and-play proprietary system that allows the user to expand the boat’s electronics as needed. This network can provide important situational awareness data like GPS, radar and sonar directly on a GPSMAP® 4008 or 5008 chartplotter.

The GMR 604 xHD has a suggested retail price of £699.99, and the GMR 606 xHD is available for £1299.99.  The GMR 1204 xHD has a suggested retail price of £699.99 and the GMR 1206 xHD is available for £1299.99.

Garmin® Introduces GHP™ 10V Marine Autopilot for Volvo Penta IPS and Sterndrive Joystick Systems

Posted April 15, 2009 | 08:58 AM in Marine , OEM | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, is proud to announce its new GHP 10V Marine Autopilot System certified by Volvo Penta for use with all Inboard Performance Systems (IPS) and Sterndrive Joystick systems. One of the first OEM manufacturers to select the GHP 10V Autopilot is Fairline, one of the world’s leading luxury performance motor yacht manufacturers.

Nigel Craine, OEM and Sales Manager for Garmin said: “Garmin’s autopilot systems are known for their industry-leading performance, reliability, and ease of use. We’re confident that our new GHP 10V autopilot will be ideal for boat manufacturers and owners installing Volvo Penta IPS propulsion systems.

“Combining the pilot with our Garmin multifunction navigation systems on board provides the helmsman confidence in any situation, and delivers the perfect cruising experience.”

The GHP 10V Autopilot System is approved for use with boats that have an integrated Volvo Penta IPS steering and propulsion system and will feature Garmin’s proven and innovative Shadow Drive™ technology – a patented feature that automatically disengages the autopilot if the helm is turned, allowing for quick and safe manual manoeuvres.

The autopilot will automatically engage again once a steady course is re-established. Boaters will cruise comfortably as Garmin’s autopilot incorporates a rock-solid gyro-stabilized heading sensor for maximum performance and reliability in rough seas.

In addition, mariners will experience confidence and security from the GHC™ 10 Autopilot Control Unit that is designed to easily configure and control the autopilot. With a bright, crisp, sunlight viewable 3.5” colour display, three soft keys, and a dedicated “standby” button, boaters will benefit from the simple, interactive interface. Three GHC 10 controllers can be interfaced with a single GHP 10V, allowing autopilot functionality at a remote location on the boat.
