More vibrant and easier to use, Garmin® Introduces GMI™ 20 and GHC™ 20

Posted April 23, 2013 | 07:00 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the GMI 20 and GHC 20, the premier Garmin instrumentation that bridges both the powerboat and sail instrument lineup.  Providing a brand new interface that’s easier to use than ever before, the GMI 20 and GHC 20 prove to be vital components in any helm.

“We’ve listened to customer feedback and built off the success of our previous marine instruments to make the GMI 20 and GHC 20 better,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of sales.  “With bigger, brighter, more vibrant screens, the GMI 20 and GHC 20 are easier to see, easier to use and provide more crucial information than ever before.”

The GMI 20 has a bonded 4-inch color screen that displays depth, speed, wind, engine information and over 100 marine and vessel-specific parameters based on the mariner’s preference.  The GMI 20 is designed to fulfill the purpose of its predecessor, the GMI 10, while further expanding functionality by providing more information in a larger and brighter format. GHC20_HR_0009.1

The GHC 20 also has a bonded 4-inch color screen that is designed to display and provide control of autopilot functions.  With a larger and brighter display, the GHC 20 is compatible with legacy Garmin autopilots while also being compatible with newer Garmin autopilot systems.  The GHC 20 can also be operated wirelessly with an autopilot remote and Garmin’s newly announced quatix™ marine watch.  New autopilot corepacks, such as the GHP™ 10, GHP 12 and GHP 20, will have the GHC 20 included.

With an updated user interface, both the GMI and GHC 20 provide menus and gauges that match the aesthetics of Garmin’s newly announced GPSMAP® 8000 Glass Helm Series.  While more user friendly and boasting a more intuitive layout that shares both backlight and color settings, the GMI and GHC 20 have the ability to be flush or flat-mounted, preserving the glass helm appearance that the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm Series provides.

GHC20_HR_0009.2Night time readability has been increased on the GMI and GHC 20.  With a choice of red/black, green/black or the normal night mode color scheme, the GMI and GHC 20 have LED backlighting that gives the ability to display information much dimmer than the previous GMI and GHC models could.  Conversely, daylight readability has also been enhanced.  With a higher contrast color scheme and wider viewing angle, the GMI and GHC 20 provide for better clarity and visibility in any sunlight.  In addition, the glass-bonded display of the GMI and GHC 20 ensures that no condensation forms within the unit.  The glass display is also treated to help prevent any glare or reflection, preserving the clearest view of data possible in any weather conditions.

A new feature introduced on the GMI 20 is auto-scroll.  With auto-scroll, the mariner can designate how quickly the pages cycle without user intervention.  The layout can be customized to scroll at different time intervals, thus allowing the freedom to install the unit in a greater variety of places and easily access the information from longer distances.  This also allows the user the ability to utilize one instrument for multiple uses.

The GMI 20 and GHC 20 are scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2013.  For additional information regarding the GMI 20 and GHC 20, visit garmin.co.uk/onthewater

Garmin® Introduces GHP™ 20 Yamaha® Helm Master™ Steer-by-Wire Autopilot

Posted April 17, 2013 | 03:02 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced its new GHP 20 Yamaha steer-by-wire autopilot – a marine autopilot certified for Yamaha Helm Master Systems. As a controller area network-based electronic steering system, the Yamaha Helm Master allows for direct autopilot control of the primary steering with no additional autopilot pump required.

“We are very excited to be the first autopilot manufacturer that brings autopilot support for the Yamaha Helm Master boat control system to the market” said Dan Bartel, vice president of worldwide sales. “With the Yamaha Helm Master, the helmsman has full control, which can lead to increased situational awareness, confidence and safety.”

Yamaha Helm Master is a fully integrated boat control system, including joystick, engineered for powerboats within twin or triple Yamaha outboard engines. The system uses state-of-the-art electronics and, with integrated joystick functionality, provides easy, 360-degree maneuvering capabilities. With the system, the helmsman can confidently move the boat forward, backward, sideways or diagonally, as well as rotating on its own axis, to accomplish docking maneuvers in tricky or crowded marinas. GHP 20 YAMAHA (2)

The Garmin GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system provides superior control algorithms for unmatched autopilot performance. The GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system will interface to a Yamaha Helm Master boat via an included gateway and take control for heading hold, basic patterns or GPS routes while the Helm Master system is in normal steering mode. Taking advantage of the dynamic gain adjustments based on tachometer information provided by the Yamaha system, the GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system offers optimal performance at all speeds.

With the GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system, Yamaha customers will enjoy features found throughout Garmin’s existing line of autopilots, including Shadow Drive technology – a capability that automatically disengages the autopilot if the helm is turned, allowing for quick and safe manual maneuvers without manually disengaging the autopilot. The autopilot will automatically re-engage once a steady course is re-established. Additionally, this new steer-by-wire autopilot works as a system-wide heading sensor, which enables MARPA and chart overlay when connected to a Garmin chartplotter and radar. For easy installation and integration with other Garmin products, the GHP 20 steer-by-wire autopilot has full NMEA 2000 connectivity.

The GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system will utilize the Garmin GHC™ 10 autopilot control unit, which was designed to help boaters configure and control the autopilot. With an easy-to-read 3.5” color display, three soft keys, and a dedicated “standby” button, boat owners with Yamaha Helm Master steering will benefit from the simple, interactive interface, and will be able to control the heading of the boat with the press of a button.

The GHP 20 Yamaha marine autopilot system is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2013. For more information on the GHP 20 for Yamaha, visit www.garmin.co.uk/onthewater

The Power of Simple: Garmin® Introduces GPSMAP® 8000 MFD and GPSMAP 8500 Black Box Series Integrating the Look and Feel of a Glass Helm

Posted February 14, 2013 | 07:00 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series, their newest flagship series added to an already extensive line of multi-function devices. Introducing a true glass helm appearance into the boating industry, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series boasts powerful new features and a revamped user-interface with a streamlined design that can make any helm look custom-built.

“The GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series features the ultimate in simplicity, ease-of-use, power and
speed,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of worldwide sales. “Incorporating the look and feel of a glass helm into the marine industry, the Glass Helm series provides a beautiful centrepiece while delivering the most important features and capabilities to the user.” 8000 page

The new generation of marine navigation displays: Offering an 8-inch SVGA, 12-inch and 15-inch XGA
multi-touch, pinch-to-zoom multi-function display, the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series boasts a lower profile than previous multi-function models. With the 12-inch and 15-inch models being 30% and 32% thinner, respectively, the 8000 MFD series can easily fit into a pre-existing space where previous MFD units were installed. In addition to a smaller frame, the 8000 units have 40% more processing power than previous models, allowing for faster user experience.

Featuring an intuitive user interface: Combined with a user-interface that’s designed for efficiency, the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series proves to be essential for any helm. The refreshed interface has been streamlined to help access the most important menus and settings and provides a more intuitive and accessible experience for the user. With a user control bar docked at the bottom of the screen, information such as waypoints, autopilot and the home menu are only a finger touch away.

GPSMAP 8500 Black Box – larger displays for larger vessels: In addition to the release of the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series, Garmin is also proud to introduce the GPSMAP 8500 Black Box series, an elegantly efficient solution for larger vessels with more helm space. Offering a 15-inch XGA, 17-inch or 19-inch SXGA multi-touch, pinch-to-zoom monitor to use with the black box, the GPSMAP 8500 Black Box series allows for easy installation wherever the user chooses and to outfit the 2.16-inch slim monitor directly in the helm. Having an independent, detached black box allows for better system cooling, larger screen size capability and easier installation. And because the Black Box series monitors are high resolution, they can receive up to a 1080p HD resolution video.

Turning your bridge into a glass helm: With a fully integrated glass display, the sleek GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series brings an elegant and customized appearance by offering a new, flat-mounting option that transforms the vessel’s bridge into a glass helm. The new series can also be installed by traditional flush mounting, providing a very low profile alternative.

8000 Glass Helm
Customize your station control with the new SmartMode™:
A valuable new feature offered on the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is SmartMode™ station control. With SmartMode, the mariner can customize numerous preset modes based off of various activities. With the simplicity of only two button pushes, SmartMode can instantly synchronize all displays to show the most desirable screens for a particular activity. Auto-dimming and power is also synced across displays, providing the easiest, most intuitive controls ever offered in our multi-function units and allowing for a custom experience to every user.

Improved on screen navigation through new 10 Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver: With the ability to utilize Garmin’s high-sensitivity 10Hz GPS/GLONASS external receiver, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is able to update position and heading ten times per second, providing significantly smoother on-screen navigation. This industry-leading GPS receiver dramatically improves the ability to mark and navigate to a waypoint and also allows for vessel movement to be crisp and fluid on screen.

Simple steering through customized autopilot: Steering with autopilot has never been easier with our new on-screen autopilot controls. With a customization that allows the user to create a quarter- or full-screen autopilot display, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series works in conjunction with the autopilot head unit to guide the vessel to where the user needs to go.

Enjoy seamless navigation with GRID™: The perfect accessory to accompany the new Glass Helm series is the GRID™ (Garmin Remote Input Device). GRID, sold separately, is a remote device that allows for seamless navigation between an individual and multiple displays. GRID can be integrated into a captain’s chair for a low-profile controlling solution.

The GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2013. For additional information regarding the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series, visit www.garmin.com/8000.

Garmin® quatix™ Marine Watch Joins the Crew to Provide More Information at Sea

Posted January 17, 2013 | 06:01 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced quatix™, its first GPS watch designed for passionate mariners, both power and sail.

Quatix combines the most crucial marine features and provides both comprehensive navigation and sailing capabilities while integrating Garmin’s industry-leading GPS technology and user-friendly interface.  Quatix allows mariners the freedom to enjoy the open waters while having the most important boating information on their wrist.

“Quatix incorporates the most fundamental and critical marine data with multiple features never before seen in one individual boating watch,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales.  “In addition to Garmin’s easy-to-use interface and wireless integration with pre-existing Garmin marine devices, quatix is a stylish aide for mariners of any type.” Quatix_HR_033.9(1).jpg

Comprehensive racing tool kit: The quatix watch combines advanced sail racing tools for unparalleled awareness and a competitive edge during a racing competition.  Quatix can easily set up a virtual starting line between two GPS waypoints.  It then combines the starting line with the built-in countdown timer to calculate both distance to the line as well as desired speed and burn time available, which enables the vessel to cross the line at maximum speed at the exact starting time.  Once the race has begun, the watch then switches to “tack-assist” mode and indicates whether the vessel is getting headed or lifted based on the optimal tack angle provided and makes for a more efficient and controlled sailing experience.

All information right off your wrist: Unlike other marine watches, quatix is the only watch available to encompass the most desirable marine features into one integrated device. Mariners can rely on quatix for multiple sets of marine data such as tidal information, COG, SOG, and VMG, along with alerts for speed and anchor drag.  Quatix is also equipped with ABC sensors (altimeter, barometer and compass), providing mariners with real-time information regarding their environment.  The built-in barometer can be used to predict weather changes, ensuring that the approaching storm conditions can be avoided. Finally, the 3-axis electronic compass provides the user’s bearing, whether in motion or not.

Feel safe at any time: In addition to providing crucial marine data, quatix helps keep the user safe as well.  With the integrated MOB feature, the watch can automatically trigger a MOB alarm on a Garmin chartplotter.  This allows the captain to see when someone wearing the quatix has fallen overboard.  If the vessel is equipped with a Garmin Autopilot, the chartplotter can then engage the autopilot and navigate back to the last known position.

Built to Endure Roughest Conditions: Designed to take on the fiercest conditions, quatix combines a high-strength housing with a mineral glass lens to help resist scratching.  This lightweight watch boasts a large LCD display with LED backlight and polyurethane wristbands, maximizing flexibility and durability. Quatix is waterproof up to 50 meters and has a long battery life, up to 6 weeks in watch mode and 16 hours in GPS mode.  Basic watch functions include alarms, chimes, various vibration alerts, timer, stopwatch and world clock with the ability to display several time zones.

Wireless Connectivity at every place of the boat: Quatix also provides wireless connectivity and integration to both BlueChart® Mobile and HomePort™ by allowing the user to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks via ANT™.  Also, quatix provides the ability to wirelessly steer the boat.  If the vessel is equipped with a Garmin Autopilot system, the quatix connects wirelessly directly to the GHC-10 in the helm and provides autopilot control.

The quatix is scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2013 and will have a suggested retail price of £379.99. For additional information regarding the quatix, visit www.garmin.com/quatix

With the integration of a 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver, both the 50s and 70s have the ability to refresh position and heading up to 10 times per second.  This allows the unit to display a constant and fluid on-screen location and provides significantly better accuracy when marking waypoints and navigating.

In conjunction with the new GPS receiver, the echoMAP 50s and 70s also allow for sonar recording.  With this feature, the vessel can coordinate the timing of the sonar return in relation to the boat’s position.  This allows for every one of the 5000 user-defined waypoints to be accurate and precise.  The echoMAP is an absolute must for the avid fisherman locating and pin-pointing the next hot fishing spot.  Other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth™ wireless capabilities that will allow anglers the chance to connect and access future marine-specific Garmin apps.

EchoMAP_70sThe perfect accessory to accompany the 50s is the new echo portable kit.  This soft-sided carrying case with rigid structure for durability and support can harbour any of the 5” echo products and is an absolute necessity for the fisherman on the go.  The echo portable provides a built-in cable management and storage system for a transducer to ensure that it can be transported at a moment’s notice.  Alongside trays designed for battery and transducer storage, the echo portable truly provides all the fishing necessities in an easy-to-handle bag.

The echoMAP 50s and 70s are scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2013.  For additional information regarding the echoMAP 50s and 70s, visit garmin.co.uk/onthewater

Garmin® Introduces New GPSMAP® 500 and 700 Series Chartplotter and Combo Units

Posted November 12, 2012 | 05:01 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced a premier addition to their fully-integrated line of GPSMAP series chartplotters and combination plotter/sonar units. Boasting a sleek new design, vibrant touchscreen and unsurpassed positioning technology, these four new models offer boaters and anglers the features they demand.

Garmin will present the new 500 and 700 chartplotter series to the international trade and media at the METS exhibition in Amsterdam, hall 01.103. Pontus Fernstrom, Director Marine Sales at Garmin will give insights about our latest solutions in marine electronics! November 13, 3 pm, Hall 01.103.

“Boaters can rely on this new line of plotters to get them to their fishing spots with unparalleled precision,” said Pontus Fernstrom, Garmin’s Director Marine Sales.  “And thanks to Spread-Spectrum CHIRP sonar capability, anglers can see deeper than ever before, with excellent target separation.” GPSMAP_721

Whether deciding between the 5-inch VGA screen on the new 500-series or the 7-inch multi-touch WVGA touchscreen on the 700-series, both allow for easy visibility, day or night. Both series provide a streamlined look by being flat or flush-mounted, while the 700-series can be gimble-mounted and the 500-series can be swivel-mounted.   Coupled with Garmin’s hallmark user-friendly interface, these chartplotters will be the focal point when showcased in any helm.

Garmin has also included WiFi and Bluetooth™ built-in to these units to allow compatibility to Garmin’s BlueChart® Mobile App as well as a suite of future applications available in 2013.

With the integration of the high-sensitivity 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver, both the new 500 and 700-series are able to update position and heading ten times per second, providing significantly smoother on-screen navigation.  This industry-leading GPS receiver dramatically improves the ability to mark and navigate to any one of 5000 user-created waypoints and also allows for vessel movement to be crisp and fluid on screen.

The product line up includes the GPSMAP 557, 751, 557xs, and 751xs with built-in UK and Ireland* Bluechart g2 charting. For superior situational awareness, mariners can also load the new GPSMAP 700 and 500 series plotters with an optional BlueChart g2 Vision® micro-SD card to navigate with a clear moving-map representation of the boat’s position.  With BlueChart g2 Vision, mariners can also take advantage of the Auto Guidance feature which suggests the best routes to follow. In addition, g2 Vision features true MarinerEye view above water or a FishEye underwater perspective – both in 3D.  And for help in navigating tricky harbours and channels – or locating marinas and resorts – g2 Vision cards offer a growing database of aerial reference photos.

GPSMAP_527With the ‘xs’ series, Garmin has not only included the newly redesigned, highly acclaimed HD-ID sonar technology but they’ve also included built-in Spread-Spectrum CHIRP sonar capability.  When used with a compatible CHIRP transducer, the combination devices can display crystal-clear sonar images to help find the next hidden fishing spot, ship wreckage or diving location.  With Garmin’s Spread-Spectrum technology, not only will boaters see target separation and resolution at extraordinary depths, but they can dial into specific frequencies to target certain species of fish.  Bottom contours are also more visible and signal noise can be suppressed at greater depths to provide a more timely interpretation of what’s below for safer navigation and better fishing.

The new GPSMAP standalone and combination units are scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2013.  For additional information regarding these devices, visit garmin.co.uk/onthewater

GRF™ 10 - Rudder Feedback Sensor

Pair this sensor with the GHP 12™ to provide rudder position feedback and to detect and avoid rudder stops while sailing or boating.

The GRF 10 uses a magnetic sensor to relay position information, eliminating friction that causes other types of sensors to wear out. The arm of the GRF 10 is connected to the rudder of the boat and relays position information through the sensor to the mariner so they know where the rudder is – giving them an added peace of mind when starting from a stopped position, docking, launching or moving at slow speeds.

Additionally, the GRF 10, allows sailors to:
- Know where the rudder is positioned without having to look back

- Make smoother maneuvers and avoid over-compensating

- Save undue wear and stress on their autopilot system by eliminating force on the rudder when it’s already stopped left or right.
