The new top of the line 3597LMT and 3798LMTD comes with a new powered magnetic mount, making it convenient to attach the device and keep it charged.

“The new Garmin UK range of nüvi sat navs are amongst the best we have ever produced - the new gold standard of navigation due to their ease of use, reliability and wealth of features. Alongside our industry leading free Lifetime Maps offering and the latest advancements, such as Real Directions and free lifetime traffic services, we are now proud to introduce the latest market leading innovations for a lifetime of navigation” said Dawn Ramsay, UK General Manager. “Our new line-up significantly improves the driving experience. Larger screens provide driving-related information at a glance and our new Digital Traffic offering provide the best value to customers than ever before.”

In Detail:

New *Digital Traffic: Garmin offers free lifetime digital traffic on selected nüvi models without any fees or subscriptions, helping drivers to avoid delays. The Advanced and Premium Series now make it even easier to assess the traffic situation and decide on whether an alternative route makes sense or not. Voice integration alerts drivers to traffic congestion up ahead throughout their journey the expected delay and recommend a faster alternative route to their destination. Nüvi devices in the Advanced and Premium Series that include voice command, allow drivers to select an alternative route by simply speaking a response. Garmin’s new traffic interface also depicts important traffic information next to the map view, including the expected delay as well as an animated graphic that identifies the location and severity of the traffic congestion along their route in real-time.

Through INRIX and the use of Digital Radio (DAB) technology, Garmin’s most advanced traffic service offers two main advantages in comparison to TMC (Traffic Message Channel) or the GSM network:

• Traffic information is updated every minute, up to twice as fast in comparison to current services providing drivers with earlier warning to traffic incidents helping them navigate around frustrating delays.

• Secondly, the service allows for larger data volumes (about 80x higher bandwidth than TMC) to be delivered providing drivers with more detailed information about incidents and their impacts on delays, improves accuracy and provides coverage for a broader geographic area, for example, the service reports the exact location of the incident, where the delay starts and ends, rather than stating an entire road segment is blocked like other services. As a result, drivers are ensured of the best alternative route around the jam.

All the information, which finds its way to the Garmin sat nav appears in an easy and clear way, both visually and audibly. Through sophisticated analysis of billions of real-time data points from a unique combination of sources including road sensor information, accident and incident information, weather, events and its own crowd-sourced network of real-time data from millions of vehicles and devices, INRIX provides Garmin with traffic information accurate within 2 mph of actual traffic speeds under all conditions. Garmin customers will benefit from a service that provides them with the best routes, highly accurate journey times and the insight they need to avoid frustrating delays along the way.

Garmin Real Directions™: Real Directions guide drivers in a natural and intuitive way. The new feature uses recognisable landmarks, buildings, traffic lights and junctions to give directions. For example, the new feature tells drivers to “turn right after the Starbucks®” or “turn left at the traffic light.” This provides drivers with confidence early on that they’re going the right way and lets them focus on the road instead of trying to read street signs. Garmin Real Directions™ is powered by the high-quality NAVTEQ® Map to ensure accuracy. Garmin partnered with the leading global provider of map content to develop a sophisticated data collection and processing system. The landmarks and buildings selected for directions have been checked rigorously for visibility, prominence and permanence. Additionally, Garmin also improved the navigation voice itself: Garmin Real Voice™ is a new human voice that sounds better than ever before.

Active Lane Guidance: The new Active Lane Guidance feature uses a combination of voice prompts and visual cues to prepare users to drive through an exit or interchange with confidence. Utilizing the larger screens of the nüvi devices, Active Lane Guidance displays an animated graphic next to the map view that uses brightly coloured arrows to indicate the proper lane needed to make a turn.

More Information at a Glance: Garmin’s nüvi models feature an all-new design and larger screens that range from 4.3 to 7 inches, displaying more driving-related information at a glance. The new and refined interface keeps the driving map onscreen at all times and displays additional information in slide-in windows, such as points of interest along the route and real-time traffic. A new Up Ahead function provides easy access to points of interest nearby. Up Ahead appears alongside the driving map and constantly informs of nearby services, including restaurants, fuel stations, hospitals and stores.

Bluetooth: With built-in *Bluetooth wireless technology, you can sync with your compatible mobile phone for hands-free phone calling and even access your phone book and call history via the sat nav – no need to look at, touch or even find your phone.

Smartphone link: Selected Advance and premium models with Bluetooth are compatible with Garmin Smartphone Link, an Android and ISO app that provides live services to the PND. It also allows the user to send locations and addresses to the paired device so that you can literally search an address on your smartphone and by the time you switch on your Garmin sat nav the destination will already be preloaded for your journey. Among other functionalities, the app lets nüvi users add live services such as mobile speed cameras4, traffic camera images4 and weather to their navigation device, utilizing the smartphone's mobile data plan.

Garmin Express: Garmin Express is a new and seamless way to keep nüvi devices up to date. Users simply download the free software to receive free lifetime software updates. Garmin Express also provides an easy way to update maps, backup or transfer data and download content, such as free vehicles icons, voices and dashboards.

Lifetime Maps: Garmin nüvi devices use NAVTEQ Maps which have been meticulously developed over the last 30 years. Models with free Lifetime Map updates1 give drivers the reassurance they always have most up to date maps, points of interest and navigation information on board. The very latest maps are available to download with no subscription or update fees.

Compatible with Garmin Smartphone Link, it is the only navigation device for truckers with the ability to receive real-time information3 through a smartphone app, such as fuel prices, traffic camera images and weather.

The Garmin dēzl 760LMT will be on display at the Elmia Truck Show (August 22-25, 2012) in the Garmin booth (B02:02) in Jonkoping, Sweden.

“The new dēzl 760LMT is designed to meet the specific needs of truckers, helping to make their jobTruckProfile_1 easier and save time, fuel, and money,” said Clive Taylor, Garmin director of EMEA product marketing. “Its seven-inch display makes it easy for truckers to see all the information they need at a glance and allows for split-screen depiction of our new Active Lane Guidance. With features like trip data recording, border notices and real-time information through Smartphone Link, the dēzl 760LMT becomes a full-featured digital assistant in the cab.”

Truck-Specific Navigation: With detailed maps and leading Garmin navigation technology, the dēzl 760LMT provides truck-specific routes and turn-by-turn directions based on vehicle height, weight, length and carriage. Users can simply enter their truck’s profile and the device will consider truck-verified roads that are suitable for the truck’s characteristics. It also provides warnings of upcoming hazards such as low tree branches and sharp curves. The device can save multiple truck profiles and users can change the active profile at any point. Finding pit stops is a cinch with trucking specific POIs, including truck stops, weigh stations, dealerships and washes. To ensure that truckers know ahead of time what is coming after the next bend, they will be shown up to the next four turns along the route ahead.

Fleet Management Interface Compatible: The new dēzl 760LMT can be part of your fleet management solution. It is also compatible with the Garmin Fleet Management Interface (FMI) and can be integrated within a telematics solution provided by a Garmin partner.

It utilizes the existing data connection of a smartphone by simply pairing it to the dēzl 760LMT via Bluetooth®. Users can then access real-time information right from their dēzl unit, such as traffic, images from traffic cameras, weather, parking, fuel prices and more. Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, have released the latest Garmin cityXplorer mapping update for London. If you're heading for the capital for some world-class sport this summer, trust cityXplorer pedestrian maps to help you navigate to all the key sites. Big ben

The maps designed for Garmin’s sat navs will enable you to navigate the big city during the busiest time London has seen for many years, helping you feel like a local in an unfamiliar city. The enhanced pedestrian navigation¹ gives you directions that let you walk or use public transport to get you where you need to go, estimated times of arrival and key locations like parking, restaurants, hotels, fan zones and sporting venues.

The 2012 cityXplorer London, has all the latest facilities on your sat nav – plus thousands of new points of interest (POI’s), new landmarks, bus routes, walkways and hundreds POI’s covering sporting events in the city. You can use the maps in the car, on foot or on public transport.

Another great aspect of the cityXplorer London map is that there is no need for a GPS signal for the map to work: you can preview your city tour from the comfort of your hotel room, or even while on the underground metro, before setting out on foot.

cityXplorer can also be used to enhance your Garmin sat nav even if the city is outside your preloaded base map. For example, you may be planning to come to London but only have mapping for the US or a single European country. Simply upload cityXplorer London, use your sat nav like a handheld GPS, and enjoy finding your way around all the great locations London has to offer.

Just for peace of mind POI’s like hospitals, police stations and Embassy’s are also included, helping to ensure you have every aspect of your trip covered.

cityXplorer London can be downloaded for £8.99 - weblink: http://goo.gl/mDe1y .

Garmin has dozens of great world cities to choose from, with extended regional coverage in addition to detailed downtown street plans.

¹Enhanced pedestrian mode, which includes public transit information, is available on compatible devices only.

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, has today announced the zūmo 350LM GPS navigator – a stylish, rugged, sunlight readable, high-resolution and glove-friendly 4.3-inch touchscreen biker sat nav. It’s the first motorcycle navigator with lifetime maps so you’ll always know the way, even while Zumo340LM_HR_102exploring the back roads. If you like to be more prepared, simply use Garmin’s free Basecamp software to plan your route before you go, send to your zūmo and even share your rides with friends. Of course, you can also use zumo 350LM in the car (motorcycle and car mounts included), for complete flexibility.

The zūmo 660LM has also been launched today. It adds Lifetime Map updates to Garmin’s well-respected and well-liked, premium motorcycle navigator.

“Valuable features, like the service history log (on the zūmo 350LM), Lane assist with junction view and tracback are just a few of the reasons the zūmo has become an essential tool for motorcyclists all over the world,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The zūmo 350LM is lightweight, includes lifetime map updates, transmits directions via compatible Bluetooth™ headsets/helmets and can handle the toughest weather conditions¹.”

The zūmo 350LM offers you the convenience of lifetime map updates² which provide up-to-date mapping and the most current information about businesses like restaurants, cashpoints, hospitals and more. With the easy to use premium navigation search bar, zūmo returns results for points of interest (POIs) as they are typed providing a faster, more intuitive experience. There’s also a speed limit indicator and Exit Services that display petrol stations, shops and restaurants for upcoming exits. With the TracBack feature riders really can ride wherever the road takes them, as it is now as easy as a button push to navigate along that same route back to where the adventure started.

BaseCamp™ compatible, the zūmo 350LM (as well as the zūmo 220 and 660) make it easy for motorcyclists to plan their next ride. The free software allows users to create routes, waypoints and tracks from their computer and transfer them to the zūmo. With the “Track Draw” feature riders can trace their planned route and view elevation changes, helping estimate the difficulty of the ride. After an open road or off the beaten path adventure, send the ride to Basecamp, upload pictures and share the adventure with friends and relive the experience.

zūmo 350LM is more than just a GPS navigator. Its new Service History Log lets riders record the date, mileage and type of maintenance performed on their motorcycles. Tyre mileage, tyre changes, tyre pressure, chain cleanings, oil changes, new spark plugs – almost anything you can think of, zūmo will keep a record of it.

Whether riding during a bright summer day or a moonless autumn night, the zūmo 350LM has Zumo350_HR_0116motorcycle-friendly features any rider will appreciate. Lane assist with junction view guides riders to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, and realistically displays road signs and junctions on the route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

The new zūmo 350LM has a suggested retail price of £419.99. The zumo 660LM has a suggested retail price of £499.99.

²If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.

Garmin warns of traffic hot spots and urges families to plan ahead for Jubilee weekend

Posted May 31, 2012 | 05:59 AM in Automotive | Permalink

The Jubilee weekend – when thousands of people all over the country will be celebrating with their friends and family the Queen’s 60 year reign.  Great news for celebrations – bad news for drivers hoping to get from A to B as fast as possible.

The team at Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, have done some research to find out how many Brits will be taking to the road this bank holiday, finding that 72% of the UK will be travelling within 25 miles away from home over the weekend therefore increasing the chance of a large amount of local traffic.

Surprisingly nearly a half of Londoners are intending to travel out of London for the Jubilee celebration with 67% of those surveyed travelling by car over the weekend, again indicating a high chance of congestion.

Anthony Chmarny from Garmin says: “The Jubilee bank holiday is sure to be a fantastic weekend but the last thing we want to be doing is sitting in traffic, wasting precious time or looking for quick routes to escape the crowds.”

Together with the Highways Agency, Garmin is advising families to check traffic and weather before they set out and to plan their journeys.

Anthony says: “I recommend anyone hitting the roads this bank holiday to plan ahead.  As the weather has been so good, this will undoubtedly encourage more people to enjoy trips away, making it even more important to leave earlier than anticipated and plan your route.  Think about the roads that attract the most crowds and try to avoid them by doing some research before you leave.

“As we all know, the weather has been very changeable of late and rain and strong winds can make any journey more difficult, so allow more time, keep your speed down and ensure your vehicle is in tip top condition.

“Importantly, don’t get stressed in traffic.  If you have a Sat-Nav with up-to-date maps you can easily look for alternate routes to travel as you’ve got a trust worthy source that will lead you to your destination.”

The Highways Agency, which manages motorways and major A-roads in England, is lifting almost nine out of ten roadworks to help people on their way – but most holiday congestion is caused simply by so many people heading for the beach at the same time and that’s where Garmin can help.

Roads anticipated to be most busy this weekend are the traditional holiday routes including the M5 and routes to the West Country, the M6 through Lancashire towards the Lakes, main roads to the south coast and the M20 towards the Channel ports.  These are expected to be busier than usual on Friday evening, with holiday traffic peaking by lunchtime Saturday.  Over the weekend there are also expected to be crowds heading to London where there are some road closures associated with Jubilee events.

Garmin’s range of state-of-the-art Satellite Navigation systems have 3D Live Traffic technology that provides you with the best all-round view of the traffic situation at any given moment – an essential for anyone embarking on a road trip over the summer months.  Route information is checked every 30 seconds and updated every 2 minutes, meaning that you are able to find out about incidents as they happen and take action to avoid them.  The system includes updates from the Highways Agency control rooms and technology built into the English motorway network.

This month Garmin announced that it has sold more than 100 million of its products to motorists, pilots, boaters, runners, cyclists, golfers, hikers and geocachers – who all depend on Garmin to help show them the way.

Posted May 3, 2012 | 05:05 AM in Automotive | Permalink

This May bank holiday the roads will undoubtedly be busy with drivers keen to enjoy the long weekend and escape the hubbub of everyday life.

“No matter how wonderful bank holidays are, they now come with the added image of sitting in traffic, busy roads and precious time wasted while we look for quick routes to escape the crowds." said Anthony Chmarny from Garmin, adding, "I recommend anyone hitting the roads this bank holiday to plan ahead.  Think about the routes that attract the most crowds and try to avoid them by doing some research before you leave.

Check out the weather, rain and strong winds can make any journey more difficult, so allow  more time, keep your speed down and ensure your vehicle is in tip top condition.

Importantly, don’t get stressed in traffic.  If you have a Sat-Nav you can easily look for alternative routes to  travel as you’ve got a trust worthy source that will lead you to your destination.”

This advice is of course not only relevant for this bank holiday but for the bank holidays coming up in June to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Anthony adds: “We all want to make the most of our precious time off and not spend it sitting in cars, battling with the traffic.  By careful planning and ensuring you have a trust worthy sat-nav at your side, you can beat the crowds and find a quick route to use.”

Loc8 Codes helping to save lives

Posted March 21, 2012 | 09:38 AM in Automotive , Corporate | Permalink

Garmin sat navs preloaded with Loc8, a Digital Address Coding system, are being used by the Health Services Executive in Ireland to help save lives. Key emergency locations are now identified using this innovative system which precisely pinpoints destinations on navigation devices. The aim is help crews know exactly where they’re going, therefore saving time – and lives.

The Chief Emergency Management Officer of the HSE South, Mr. Peter Daly, is using Loc8 Codes in his emergency plans: "Loc8 Codes are now being used on an inter-agency basis, particularly for upper-tier chemical plants. They ensure emergency staff can reach locations quickly without the guesswork caused by confusing or imprecise postal addresses or complicated coordinates. Staff simply enter the Loc8 Code directly into a sat nav and don’t have to worry about going to the wrong place.”

Loc8 Codes are free-to-create “location codes” that work like a modern postcode to make addresses more accurate. They can even be used on non-property based destinations such as tourist attractions, fishing spots, outdoor events, accident locations and more. You simply assign a unique reference to the location and use it to search and navigate with a Garmin sat nav for pinpoint-accurate addressing.

CEO of Loc8 Code Ltd, Gary Delaney, says the system is increasingly being relied upon: “All sorts of organisations are finding Loc8 Codes useful, from sporting organisations such as the GAA  and car park operators to private businesses and couriers. The General Lighthouse Authority for all of Ireland is even using the Codes to help visitors and contractors find their way to these iconic structures, which, although seen easily from sea, can be difficult to find on land!”

Director of Automotive Products for Garmin, Clive Taylor, is happy to support the use of Loc8 Codes on sat navs: “We licensed Loc8 Codes to ensure customers (locals and visitors) using our sat navs in the Republic and Northern Ireland would be able to benefit from this world-leading technology, saving time and fuel by navigating efficiently to a precise address. They help people get to the right place, first time, every time.”

Generating a Loc8 Code is free of charge at www.loc8code.com. Loc8 Codes are already being used commercially by many organisations and are now displayed by more than 5,000 companies on their websites. Medical practitioners as well as friends and relatives are also beginning to ensure medically vulnerable people have Loc8 Codes for their homes, ready to use in the event of an emergency.

Garmin and Loc8 Code Ltd have also agreed to collaborate in deploying Loc8 Codes in other countries where the need is identified.

Posted January 9, 2012 | 05:01 AM in Automotive | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the launch of Smartphone Link, the first Android app to provide live services to personal navigation devices (PNDs). Smartphone Link creates a seamless navigation experience between selected Bluetooth® enabled 2012 Garmin nüvi and an AndroidTM smartphone allowing them to communicate and share data.Smartphone3

Among other functionalities, the app lets nüvi users add live services, such as traffic information, traffic camera images, safety cameras including community shared mobile camera sites, weather, parking and fuel prices to their navigation device, utilizing the smartphone's mobile data plan. Garmin Smartphone Link is available at no cost in the Android Market and includes several free live services as well as premium content available through subscriptions.

Nuvi 35xx 6“Garmin Smartphone Link brings the benefit of live services to a PND while solving the problem of having to pay for an extra data plan, by utilizing the existing connection of a smartphone,” said Clive Taylor, Director Automotive Product Marketing. “It is a great example of how smartphone apps can complement navigation devices, combining the strengths of navigation a PND can offer in the car, such as bigger screens and better GPS reception, and the last mile navigation from your smartphone outside of the car.”

Nuvi 35xx 5Free connected services will include the Garmin Tracker application which enables you to allow friends on Facebook and Twitter to track your location, live weather information and myGarmin™ messaging, which provides update notifications and special offers from Garmin. Premium Live Services include the following:

3D Live Traffic (£19.99 per year): Garmin 3D Live Traffic provides real-time information to help users navigate in and around congestion. 3D Live Traffic is updated every two minutes and receives up to 2,000 messages every update cycle, including details of traffic incidents, road conditions and delays. It covers motorways, dual carriageways and major roads.

photoLive traffic cameras (£8.49 per year): This functionality is an addition to Garmin’s Live Traffic feature and provides drivers the ability to literally see traffic conditions ahead of time. It lets users easily look up real-time photos from traffic cameras to get a glance at traffic and weather conditions. Included is direct access to over 3,000 traffic cameras across England, Scotland and Scandinavia.

Fuel Prices (£8.49 per year): Users can find the best prices for any type of fuel in their area by tapping the screen and selecting a station.

Speedwatch safety camera (£8.49 per year): Speedwatch safety camera updates include Fixed, Temporary and Average speed cameras, Mobile zones, Red light and even Customer reported Live Mobile cameras crowd sourced by the Speedwatch community of users.

Advanced Weather (£8.49 per year): Get current and 5-day forecasts for your area. In addition to what the free weather service provides, Advanced Weather also allows users to receive severe weather alerts and view animated radar images on their regional map to see what’s heading their way!  Colours distinguish types of precipitation such as rain, snow and ice, to help you avoid bad driving conditions.

In addition to using Garmin Live Services, Smartphone Link allows the Garmin sat nav to share its favourite locations with the phone. And better yet, the app can help users find their way from a parking spot to their destination and back by displaying both on a map.

Garmin Smartphone Link works with selected Bluetooth enabled 2012 Garmin PNDs, the nüvi 2475LT, 2495LMT, 2595LMT, 3490LT, 3490LMT and the all-new 3590LMT, the company’s most feature-packed 5” navigator. All of these models require a software update, except the nüvi 3590LMT. Garmin Smartphone Link is available from the Android Market at no cost. To learn more, go to http://sites.garmin.com/smartphonelink.

The new nüvi 3590LMT features thin and stylish form factor and large 5-inch glass display, pinch-to-zoom touchscreen interaction, automatic dual-screen orientation and Garmin’s most advanced ensemble of mapping and navigation features available: Guidance 3, lifetime 3D traffic updates[1], voice-activated navigation, free lifetime map updates[2], lane assist with photoReal and Bird’s Eye junction view (a Garmin exclusive), 3-D landmarks and terrain views, and exit services, among many other functions.
