Log your distances. Measure your progress. The New Garmin Swim™

Posted June 25, 2012 | 04:58 AM in Corporate , Fitness | Permalink

SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland/June 25, 2012/Business Wire — Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced Garmin Swim™ – its first training watch designed specifically for swimmers that lets users track stroke type, stroke count, distance, pace, lengths and much more. This stylish thin watch also allows swimmers to track their workouts and drills in real-time.

GarminSwim_HR_035_T2“We put all of Garmin’s experience and knowledge, from our wide range of fitness products, and our passion for swimming into the new watch to help satisfy the special training demands of all swimmers”, says Andrew Silver, Garmin’s Product Manager Fitness EMEA. “No longer will you need to count laps you can trust Garmin Swim to do the maths. Not only that, Garmin Swim logs distance, pace, stroke count and stroke type and calculates swim efficiency to help improve your times and technique.”

Garmin Swim is ready to go right out of the box – swimmers need only to tell it the length of the pool they are swimming in and begin their workout. Its sleek profile allows it to cut right through the water, so it won’t cause drag or slow swimmers down. Garmin Swim’s battery lasts approximately one year and is easy to replace at home, so swimmers won’t have to send it away to stay powered. To see Garmin Swim in action go to: www.garmin.com/swim.

With Garmin Swim on the wrist, swimmers can focus on their technique instead of what lap they are on. Garmin Swim automatically knows the stroke swimmers are using and tracks their lengths, strokes, distance, pace and more. With a few button presses, swimmers can also log drills or start timed sets without constantly monitoring the pool clock. It even calculates swimmers’ swolf scores to help gauge efficiency, making it ideal for lap swimmers of all levels. The intuitive interface utilizes 6 buttons, so functions can be accessed quickly and easily.

Slim and attractive enough to be worn as a daily watch, Garmin Swim serves as a personal reminder of swimmers’ goals. To help swimmers stay motivated, it displays their weekly accumulated distance under the time of day. Watch features include dual time zones and alarm - so no more early morning excuses for not getting to the pool.

Upon completion of a workout, swimmers can upload their swim data to Garmin Connect™ (http://connect.garmin.com), a website for free online analysis. Here swimmers can quickly and easily view their workouts, track their totals, set goals, share workouts and data with coaches, friends and family and participate in an online fitness community of more than 80 million activities around the world. Through the magic of ANT+™ wireless technology and the USB stick that comes with the Garmin Swim, swimmers’ workout data automatically transfers to their computer when in range. Garmin Connect is Mac® and Windows® compatible.

The new Garmin Swim is available from June 25th and will have a suggested retail price of £129.99/€149. For more information visit www.garmin.com/swim.

Garmin® Support Airmar Launch of Bluefin Tuna Challenge in Scotland with Latest Echosounder technology

Posted June 22, 2012 | 07:28 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, is pleased to announce the support of the AIRMAR Tuna Challenge in Scotland with their latest Fishfinder technology.

17600 ft shotGarmin has outfitted the project boat with a full suite of cutting edge marine electronics including Garmin’s new GSD 26, the company’s new echosounder with revolutionary spread spectrum (CHIRP) technology.  “We’re excited to join AIRMAR in a project that showcases our latest serious fishfinding technology that has completely changed the fishfinder industry,” quoted Nigel Craine, Garmin’s European Marine OEM Sales Manager.  The project boat, ‘Keep it Reel’ is a 40’ Rodman 1250 Fisher Pro owned by Barry Larsen, famous motorboat racer and sportfishing enthusiast.

AIRMAR Technology Corporation ‘Bluefin Tuna - Past and Present’, summer fishing expedition is focused on utilizing the latest fishfinding technology to locate Atlantic bluefin tuna in the waters surrounding Scotland.  This species has been overfished in the last twenty years but some recent studies and climatic changes are showing an encouraging rebirth of the North Atlantic population thanks to some great conservation efforts in the Western Atlantic. “We see this as a perfect opportunity to demonstrate AIRMAR’s new CHIRP technology,” quoted Bertrand Picarda, General Manager AIRMAR EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). AIRMAR’s new broadband transducers deliver five times greater sensitivity and performance than current fishfinder technology and are the enabling technology for next generation CHIRP (compressed high-intensity radar pulse) fishfinders.  “Our goal is to demonstrate the return of the bluefin tuna in our region by utilizing the latest echosounder technology,” added Picarda.

As the Leader of the expedition, Picarda has pulled together a team of industry experts dedicated to raising the profile of big game fishing in Europe. Besides being an employee of AIRMAR Technology Corp., Picarda has over a decade of experience in big game fishing with general and proven results in BFT (Bluefin tuna) competitions in the Mediterranean from 1998 through 2003 including two national titles in the French Tuna Fishing Championship in 2001 & 2002.

The expedition will begin on June 21st in North Minch, the Atlantic sea channel between the Outer Hebrides island group on the west and the mainland of Scotland on the east. The channel varies in width between 25 and 45 miles (40 and 70 km) and has both great depth and a rapid current.  The expedition will take place from June – October with the team’s goal of fishing ten days per month in different locations.

For full project details including a team biography, boat information including a full list of equipment, itinerary and photos, please visit www.airmar.com/blog.  The blog goes live today and will be the primary source for information on ‘Bluefin Tuna - Past and Present’.

It’s the first motorcycle navigator with lifetime maps so you’ll always know the way, even while Zumo340LM_HR_102exploring the back roads. If you like to be more prepared, simply use Garmin’s free Basecamp software to plan your route before you go, send to your zūmo and even share your rides with friends. The zūmo 660LM has also been launched today. It adds Lifetime Map updates to Garmin’s well-respected and well-liked, premium motorcycle navigator.

“Valuable features, like the service history log (on the zūmo 350LM), Lane assist with junction view and tracback are just a few of the reasons the zūmo has become an essential tool for motorcyclists all over the world,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The zūmo 350LM is lightweight, includes lifetime map updates, transmits directions via compatible Bluetooth™ headsets/helmets and can handle the toughest weather conditions¹.”

²If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription.
