Garmin’s® speedy coverage in Ireland

Posted November 25, 2010 | 03:13 AM in Automotive | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation, has added more than 300 new mobile camera zones to the existing 570 mobile zones and 17 fixed cameras in the Republic of Ireland, for a total of  887.
Each of these zones can be up to 7-8km long and involve between two and five speed limit changes throughout the zone which is mapped into the database.

Every Garmin sat nav comes loaded with information on camera locations for the UK and Ireland, as well as Europe on selected models. The freqent updates provided by Garmin mean users will get every current mobile zone, with all the correct speed limits, delivered in an accurate and reliable manner.
Garmin’s unique database of camera locations, managed by speed camera specialist Cyclops, is split into individual speed limit zones in the Republic of Ireland.

This is continuously checked and refreshed.  As part of the normal process of updating, Cyclops has cross referenced all the new mobile sites against known locations where cameras have been placed in the past. As a result, anyone who updates maps on their Garmin sat nav will get all the latest fixed or mobile, average speed, variable or temporary cameras / roadwork’s sites or red light speed camera information.

Each location is physically inspected to confirm camera type, direction, average speed and distance covered, so when you’re driving you’ll only be alerted about the cameras specific to the road you are travelling and in the direction you’re travelling– avoiding irritating false alarms.

As cameras can be relocated any time or increased in numbers, the only way to be fully informed is by getting your sat nav updated regularly. To get a free trial of Garmin’s safety cameras on your sat nav or to subscribe to regular updates go to www.garmin.ie/freecameras.

Also, Garmin now offers subscription free premium traffic alerts for Dublin and surrounding areas on all units with a ‘T’ after the model number. This includes vital delay and severity information- reducing the time you are sitting in traffic. For further information please visit www.garmin.ie/traffic

Get your Garmin talking Na'Vi

Posted November 15, 2010 | 11:56 AM in Automotive | Permalink

Tired of hearing the same old sat nav voice?  You’ve now arrived at your “tìkan” (destination). In celebration of the release of AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD this week you can now customize your Garmin nüvi with Na’vi voice directions.  Due to growing demand from the public, Garmin has released customized directions in the native language of Avatar’s Na’vis, which are downloadable on the Garmin website. (http://www.garmin.com/uk/extras/avatar/)

The ultimate Avatar fan can now get full driving instructions – mìn ftär (turn left), mìn skien (turn right) and txìng musìna tsengit (exit roundabout) for example, making getting to your destination all that much more exciting for Avatar fans here in the U.K.

Taronyu aka Richard Littauer, the U.K’s number 1 Avatar fan, who also created a Na’Vi dictionary has been working with Garmin to record the vocal cues and directions in Na’Vi for customers to download.

Example of well know sat nav directions in Na’Vi;

  • Ftexy ‘awve tihum, min ftar ro musina tsengit mi zam ayvenu pate ro tikan”
    • “Take 1st exit, turn left at roundabout. In 100 feet arrive at destination”
  • “fpxäkìm musìna tsengit tsar ftxey muve tìhum. Seralew tìkan mi hìma fya'o.
    • “Enter roundabout then take second exit.  Continue on route and arrive at destination in ¾ of a mile”
  • “fongueo. mìn lahea fya'o”
    • “Traffic ahead. Make a u-turn”
  • Mi apxa 'it fya'oä mìn skien
    • “In half a mile turn right”

Anthony Chmarny, Garmin’s Head of Communications said, “ The Na’Vi voice is a bit of fun to help celebrate the release of the Extended Collector’s Edition of AVATAR. It’s great and I’m sure it will bring a smile to your face when trying to get from ‘A to B’ whilst using your Garmin nüvi sat nav.”

The three-disc AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and AVATAR Collector’s Edition DVD were released on Monday and both feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, and new collector’s extended cut with over 15 more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening earth scene. Viewers will have the ability to journey to the far-reaches of Pandora with “Capturing Avatar“ an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16-year filmmaker journey that includes all new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring Cameron’s unique vision for the film now seen by more than 310 million people worldwide.  The Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. For the ultimate fan, the UK is also releasing a limited run of an Exclusive Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Boxset with only 1000 copies available.

Garmin® Expands its xHD Radar Offerings with New 4kW Open Arrays

Posted November 15, 2010 | 08:00 AM in Marine | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation*, today announced two new xHD open-array radar models, which will give mariners high-definition picture quality in a robust yet affordable package. The GMR™ 404 xHD and GMR 406 xHD complement the powerful xHD family of open-array radar scanners, which now offer the same high performance in a 4, 6 or 12 kilowatt scanner.   IMG_9898 404xHD radar

“The detail-rich GMR 404/406 xHD scanners are ideal for the budget conscious captain who demands more performance than a radome can provide,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “These new scanners bring premium high-definition digital technology to today’s more discerning marine market, and do so at an appealing price.”

With four kilowatts of power output, these dual-speed scanners combine 72 nautical mile maximum range with advanced video technology that yields nearly eight times more signal processing bandwidth than predecessor designs. With this high-end performance, mariners can count on improved resolution and target separation, plus better detection and presentation of small or distant returns that might go undetected on traditional analogue radar systems. The powerful 6-foot GMR 406 xHD features a 1.1-degree horizontal and 25-degree vertical beamwidth, while the 4-foot GMR 404 xHD focuses energy with a 1.8-degree horizontal and 25-degree vertical beamwidth.

For increased situational awareness in all environments, these new radar units also incorporate a Dual Range feature that allows a Garmin network-compatible multi-function display (MFD) to show two ranges simultaneously, so users can see both close and distant targets on one display. Like other Garmin radar devices, these new units also support MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) collision avoidance capability, which allows mariners to track the course, speed, and predicted closest approach of multiple targets (with optional heading sensor).

These new xHD scanners transmit data over the Garmin Marine Network™, a 100-megabit plug-and-play proprietary network that allows the user to expand the boat’s system as needed. When installed with Garmin’s GPSMAP® 6000 or 7000 series network multifunction displays, the GMR 404/406 xHD can display images in full colour using a multi-hued spectrum to indicate radar return, and you can overlay the xHD radar image on the chartplotter’s map page as an aide to locational awareness.

The GMR HD radar pedestal has an RRP of €3299. The 404 xHD radar is available for a suggested retail price of €799 and the GMR 406 xHD is available for an RRP of €1499.

All Garmin radar units come standard with a full two-year warranty. These new xHD units are expected to be available in first quarter 2011.
