Garmin® Approach® S1 launches as first golf GPS watch, showing key distances for vast database of preloaded courses

Posted October 27, 2010 | 01:00 AM in Outdoor | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader* in satellite navigation, today announced Approach S1, the first Garmin GPS wristwatch designed specifically for golf. The new Approach S1 works out where you are on the course using its inbuilt GPS receiver and displays precise yardages to the front, back and middle of greens ensuring you keep to time, on track and on par. It also comes preloaded with nearly 5000 European golf courses across Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.ApproachS1_LR_102.3

“With the Approach S1 golf GPS watch, Garmin has once again created an entirely new category for fitness and outdoor recreation,” said Clive Taylor, Director of Product and Marketing. “Golfers who want their data and their device as streamlined as possible will find Approach S1 a sleek and simple hands-free solution to taking the guesswork out of their game.”

Constantly updating based on a golfer’s actual real-time location, Approach S1 can also measure individual shot distances – all while functioning as a high-quality, everyday watch. Approach S1 comes preloaded with nearly 5000 European courses so there’s no need for subscriptions or downloads – simply select “Start Round,” choose your course and you’re ready to tee off.

Rugged and waterproof, Approach S1 weighs only 1.8 ounces, has an ultra-thin backlit display, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts up to eight hours in GPS mode and up to three weeks in watch mode – making it perfect for the boardroom, the bunkers and all points in between. In addition to the wide range of preloaded courses, Approach S1 features an easy-to-set alarm and automatic time and time zone detection, making it the perfect companion for travellers.

Once in golf mode, Approach S1 quickly acquires satellites and displays a list of nearby courses. Once a course is selected, three distances to each hole will always be provided – front, middle and back of the green – with those details being updated automatically and adjusted depending on the angle of approach. During the course of play, Approach S1 displays the hole number and par, and it automatically transitions from one hole to the next.

Once golfers begin a round in golf mode, they can easily transition between time of day and distances to green, and they can access the menu to measure the distance of their last shot to improve their game or shore up bragging rights. Acting as a GPS-enabled odometer, Approach S1 helps golfers track the total ground they’ve covered on foot during each round (or even on a walk over lunch) so that they can see the true health benefits of leaving the cart in the clubhouse.

Golfers can go to www.garmin.co.uk/approach to check if their course is among those available for the Approach S1. At www.garmin.co.uk/approach, golfers can also learn more about Garmin’s Approach G5 and Approach G3 touchscreen handhelds that feature preloaded course coverage and detailed vector mapping unlike anything used before on a golf course.ApproachS1_HR_100.2

Approach S1 represents the latest breakthrough from Garmin, which has spent more than 20 years developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives, making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries. Garmin Enters the Part 25 Business Jet Market with the G5000™

Posted October 19, 2010 | 07:52 AM in Aviation | Permalink

Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation*, is pleased to announce that it is developing a revolutionary, integrated flight deck for the Part 25 business jet market. The Garmin G5000 is designed specifically for crew-flown turbine aircraft and combines a dual multi-sensor flight management system (FMS), touchscreen vehicle management units, and multi-pane cockpit displays. These widescreen displays with touchscreen controls give pilots more useful information at their fingertips than ever before such as worldwide weather, Garmin’s synthetic vision technology (SVT™), aircraft synoptics, electronic flight charts, and more.

“We’re eager to serve the Part 25 market and are confident that our fully integrated flight deck and award-winning customer support will exceed the expectations of flight departments and aircraft manufacturers in this segment,” said Gary Kelley, vice president of marketing. “Like other Garmin products, the G5000’s architecture is designed with future growth and technologies in mind. Customers and aircraft manufacturers will be able to add significant capabilities to the system in the future, often without requiring additional hardware.”

On the big screen
The G5000 features WXGA high resolution, wide aspect ratio (12-inch or 14-inch diagonal) primary flight displays (PFD) and multi-function displays (MFD).  Because the G5000 is scalable, aircraft manufacturers can choose as many displays as cockpit real estate will allow.
The landscape oriented screens have multi-pane display capability that allows multiple pages to be viewed side-by-side on any of the screens. Therefore, pilots can simultaneously view maps, charts, checklists and aircraft systems synoptics, TAWS, TCAS, flight planning, weather or video input pages.

Touch and go
Combining and leveraging the experience gained from designing and delivering over 37 million automotive consumer products and 7,500 integrated avionic flight decks, the G5000 has a vehicle management system with an infrared touchscreen interface that is easy to understand and use – pilots simply touch what they want to change. The vehicle management system has a desktop-like menu interface with intuitive icons, audio and visual feedback, and animation so that pilots know exactly how the system is responding to their input. The touchscreen also enhances ease of use through common sense functions like “back” and “home” that let pilots quickly retrace their steps or return to the home screen.

The vehicle management system also incorporates three conventional controls at the bottom of the display: a volume control knob, dedicated map joystick, and dual concentric knobs for data entry. Pilots may choose to use the knobs instead of the touchscreen to enter information and the knobs’ functions are always labeled on the display.

Advanced technology and capabilities
The G5000 integrated flight deck is expected to satisfy the global operational requirements of emerging NextGen (Next Generation for U.S. airspace) and SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) initiatives.

The G5000 includes a three-axis, fully digital, dual channel, fail passive autoflight system, and has the ability to provide tightly integrated auto-throttle capability. It also has the features pilots have come to expect in this class of aircraft such as wide area augmentation system (WAAS) technology that enables GPS-guided LPV “glidepath” approaches to ILS-comparable minimums without reliance upon ground-based navaids. Additionally, the G5000 has planned growth to provide RNP procedures, including RNP SAAAR (required navigation performance special aircraft and aircrew authorization required).

Displayed on the G5000’s widescreens, Garmin’s SVT presents near life-like 3D depictions of terrain, obstacles, traffic and the runway environment so that the image on the display replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day. SVT works seamlessly to alert pilots of potential ground hazards by displaying terrain and obstacles which pose a threat to the aircraft with appropriate TAWS alert coloring, as well as voice alerts. SVT also includes the ability to display pathways (or Highway-In-The-Sky) that are depicted as 3D “flying rectangles” and help pilots stay on course when flying en route legs, VNAV legs, GPS/WAAS vertical approach procedures, ILS approach procedures, and arrival and departure procedures.

The G5000 also includes many other situational awareness and safety of flight features that Part 25 operators will consider essential:

•    Active and passive traffic surveillance functionality using advanced TCAS II/ACAS II technology and featuring patent-pending Garmin ADS-B target correlation and tracking for industry-leading traffic management and airspace monitoring

•   Advanced weather detection and avoidance technology

•    Optional Iridium-based worldwide satellite weather datalink access

•    XM WX Satellite Weather for U.S. and Canada provides a variety of real time weather data such as NEXRAD, METAR, lightning, winds aloft, echo tops and more

•    Integrated synoptics (graphical systems displays) to help simplify monitoring and control of aircraft systems and aid in troubleshooting of system problems that might arise

•    Optional Electronic Stability and Protection system (Garmin ESP™) works to assist the pilot in maintaining the aircraft in a safe, flight stable condition.

•    Supports a “paperless flight deck” concept with display capability for electronic charts, flight manual data and more

•    Voice/data communications supported by digital radios and SATCOM datalink will provide future growth capabilitySupports simplified database management via flyGarmin.com The ability to display video from a third party forward looking infrared (FLIR) camera or other video sources for enhanced vision system (EVS) or live-cam video monitoring

The G5000 will be supported by Garmin’s aviation customer support team that provides 24/7 worldwide support. Garmin’s aviation customer support team has repeatedly been voted number one in Aviation International News and Professional Pilot magazines’ avionics product support surveys.
Garmin expects to receive Technical Standard Orders (TSO) certification of the new G5000 system in 2012.
Cessna Aircraft Company is the first aircraft manufacturer to announce selection of the G5000 for a Citation business jet. For more information on Garmin Aviation please visit http://www.garmin.com/uk/products/aviation-products/.

When other geocachers arrive near your cache, they’ll be alerted that the cache is nearby, and then they’ll be able to access the hints you’ve loaded into chirp. And when you return, chirp will tell you how many visitors have been to your cache.

With chirp, setting up and maintaining a multicache has never been easier. Using your compatible Garmin handheld device (such as Oregon, Dakota and the recently announced GPSMAP handhelds), chirp automatically transmits coordinates so other cachers can find each stage of your multicache. Or if you’re on a multicache, chirp lets you download coordinates. So there’s no need to manually enter numerous sets of complex coordinates – there’s just one simple touch and you’re on your way to the next stage.

Designed and tested by geocachers, chirp is built to take the rigours of the outdoors. And because chirp is password protected, the owner is the only one with programming powers. With a battery life of up to a year and a battery that’s easy to replace, chirp is long-lasting and user-friendly. Measuring 3.3 by 2.3 centimetres (slightly bigger than a ten pence piece) and weighing less than an ounce (28g), chirp is small enough to incorporate easily into your favourite caches – whether they’re already placed or still being planned.

The helpful hints provided by chirp are brought to life through paperless geocaching, which allows geocachers to help the environment and be more efficient by having cache information downloaded and displayed directly on the device. Compatible Garmin models store and display details such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don’t have to carry around printouts. Learn about geocaching, getting started and going paperless at www.garmin.com/geocaching.

Available now for a suggested retail price of £19.99, chirp represents the latest breakthrough from Garmin, which has spent more than 20 years developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives, making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries. Garmin Unveils G1000® Retrofit Program, King Air 300 and 350

Posted October 11, 2010 | 07:36 AM in Aviation | Permalink

The Global leader in Satellite navigation,  Garmin*, is proud to announce another major G1000 retrofit program. The King Air 300 and King Air 350 are expected to receive Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for a G1000 retrofit installation in mid-2011. Once completed, King Air 300 and  King Air 350 owners will be able to install the G1000 at any Garmin authorized G1000 retrofit dealer. With the completion of this STC, the G1000 will be available as a retrofit package for select King Air C90, 200, B200, 300, 350, and Cessna CitationJet aircraft.

“We have received a tremendous response to our G1000 retrofit programs,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing. “By installing a G1000 retrofit flightdeck, customers are able to completely revitalize their aircraft with state-of-the-art avionics capabilities and features that make flying safer.”

The G1000 retrofit configuration for the King Air 300 and King Air 350 features two 10.4-inch PFDs and a 15-inch MFD, and can include many of Garmin’s newest G1000 features and capabilities:

• Garmin’s Electronic Stability and Protection system (Garmin ESP™) works to assist the pilot in maintaining the aircraft in a safe, flight stable condition, and helps prevent loss-of-control conditions should the pilot become distracted, disoriented or incapacitated during flight (optional)
• Garmin’s Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT™) presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles, traffic and the runway environment on the G1000’s PFD so that the image replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day (optional)
• Garmin’s GSR 56 Iridium datalink and GDL 59 data logger and Wi-Fi datalink are independent systems that offer features like worldwide weather, voice communication, text messaging and data communication (optional)
• Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) compliant
• The GFC 700 three axis, fully digital, dual channel, fail passive Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) features roll, pitch and yaw control
• Integrated satellite weather datalink and digital-quality audio via XM WX Satellite Radio
• Integrated Class-B Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) with worldwide terrain and obstacle database, which does not require an external LRU as with other TAWS systems. Class-A TAWS is available as an option.
• Fully digital airborne weather radar with horizontal and vertical scanning capability that includes WATCH (Weather Attenuated Color Highlight) and identifies deceptively strong or unknown intensity parts of a storm
• Dual integrated radio modules that provide oceanic, enroute, terminal, and approach-approved FMS navigation with GPS/WAAS; VHF navigation with ILS; and VHF communication with 16-watt transceivers and 8.33-kHz channel spacing
• Dual integrated digital audio control systems
• Dual integrated solid-state Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS), which can align while in motion, including in-flight dynamic restarts

Thanks to the G1000’s lightweight and modular design, the G1000 installation results in a typical weight savings of over 200 pounds compared to the previous avionics installation.

Garmin anticipates receiving the STC for the King Air 300 and King Air 350 in mid-2011. Garmin has established a select list of authorized G1000 retrofit dealers to sell and install the G1000 on the King Air.
A complete list of these dealers is available at http://www8.garmin.com/products/g1000_c90/installers.jsp, and more information on Garmin Avionics can be found at www.garmin.co.uk

Garmin® Expands Forerunner® Family, Giving Runners More GPS Options

Posted October 4, 2010 | 08:35 AM in Fitness | Permalink

Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation*, today announces two new Forerunner models, which will give runners an unparalleled range of GPS options for any level of training and experience. Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 complement the simple-to-use Forerunner 110 and multisport Forerunner 310XT. These new exciting models will be first displayed at the London Cycle show from 7th to 10th October, where Garmin kit-sponsored triathletes Alistair and Jonathon Brownlee will be attending on the 9th.

Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 are ideal for runners who want more options while enjoying the ease of use that has made Garmin an industry leader,” says Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Whether you’re a beginner or an elite athlete training on the streets, the trails or the treadmill, Garmin has an accurate and intuitive solution to help you get the most out of your running.”

Forerunner 410Forerunner410_HR_500.2

Sleek and streamlined, Forerunner 410 introduces an enhanced touch bezel, a premium soft-strap heart rate monitor and new software features evolving from the revolutionary and award-winning Forerunner 405.

In addition to the enhanced touch bezel that lets runners quickly scroll and select features on the run – in all types of weather – Forerunner 410 alerts runners before transitioning into power-save mode and allows users to manually shut down the power in preparation for long breaks in training. The new touch bezel provides unmatched reliability in sweaty, rainy conditions and processes information even faster than before. When your workout’s done, Forerunner 410 keeps working by wirelessly uploading data to the Garmin Connect™ online training community when in range of your computer. It works via ANT+™ wireless technology and the USB stick that comes with the watch. No wires, no manual uploads, no sweat.

Forerunner 410 lets you customise up to three training pages with more than 30 different types of data. You can even determine how many data fields are shown on each screen — whether you see one large display field, two or three smaller fields. To get the most information during a run, you can set up your training pages to display and automatically scroll through the data you want, then lock the bezel before you set off. And when you set up advanced workouts on Forerunner 410, your running watch becomes your running coach by displaying detailed training plans and workouts while you’re on the run.

Forerunner210_HR_300 Forerunner 210

As easy to use as the popular Forerunner 110, Garmin’s new Forerunner 210 is ideal for runners who simply want to step outside, acquire satellites and start their workout. Forerunner 210 provides real-time data such as pace, distance and time by using a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with Garmin’s HotFix® technology to quickly acquire and sustain satellite reception. For runners who want more training capabilities, Forerunner 210 lets you create customised interval sessions and see your pace for each interval. You can also set up heart rate alerts to notify you when you are above or below your targets.

Available in a stylish glossy black-on-black design, Forerunner 210 looks fashionable on the run, in the office and out on the town.

With a battery life of up to eight hours in GPS/training mode and up to three weeks in power-save mode, Forerunner 210 can be an everyday watch even on a rest day. Users can save time by charging the battery and uploading workout data to Garmin Connect™ at the same time through an easy-to-use USB connection, which also is used to upload free software updates quickly from www.garmin.co.uk

Get in the zone with heart rate training

The Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 bundles feature Garmin’s premium soft strap heart rate monitor for the most comfortable fit possible. Each of these new watches has five heart rate zones, which you can customise based on your exact zones. Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 also provide heart rate-based calorie computations so you can more accurately track your calories burned.

Store, share and analyse with Garmin Connect

Because Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 store and display hundreds of hours of saved history, runners can see their totals even when they haven’t had a chance to upload to Garmin Connect. But once at Garmin Connect (http://garminconnect.com), users can quickly and easily log their workouts, track their totals, set goals, share workouts with friends and family and participate in an online fitness community of more than 40 million activities around the world. Garmin Connect displays metrics such as time, distance, speed, elevation and heart rate. This information is shown through charts, illustrations, reports and a variety of map representations including street, photo, topographic, and elevation maps as well as the popular Google™ Earth application.

Forerunner 410 and Forerunner 210 are the latest breakthroughs from Garmin, which has spent 20 years developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives, making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries.
