As a national sponsor of the Girls on the Run SoleMates charity runner program, Garmin is partnering with this great organization to further their mission and share the stories of the women and men who are “running for a reason”. Runners can sign up for any event — runs, walks, bike rides or triathlons — and raise funds that will support their chosen council of Girls on the Run. Want your next race to help change lives? Along with gaining a stronger relationship and a memorable finish line experience with her mother, Erin’s fundraising efforts will help other girls gain similar experiences through Girls on the Run.
I became a SoleMates charity runner for Girls on the Run based on another running buddy volunteer telling me about her experience. This seemed like the perfect fit for me because I had the pleasure of running several times a week with my mom. I am 34 years old and my mom is 60. My birthday present to her this year was to run the Marine Corps Marathon with her so she could complete her first full marathon. My mom joined my running group of girlfriends and inspires each of us to be like her when we grow up.
Through this experience, I gained a whole new relationship with my mom. I can only hope my young daughter will follow in our footsteps, and I will become the inspiring one for her. Until she does grow up (she's only 5), I thought I could get some practice inspiring other girls now through SoleMates. I ran my third marathon this October to raise money and awareness for Girls on the Run. It was such a pleasure to cross the finish line of the marathon with my mom and see her excitement for accomplishing this feat. Now we’re talking about doing the 2013 Goofy Challenge together!
