Garmin-sponsored triathlete Ben Collins shares his training and racing experiences with the Garmin Edge 705 and Forerunner 405.
A winter wonderland? Maybe not for triathletes. Outside it’s cold, it’s dark, it’s slippery and it’s wet...this is winter training. It can be miserable, it can be terrible, it can be tedious, and it’s vital to a great season. Most triathletes do not race until March of April at the earliest, and May or June for those who live in the northern states. Training at this point in the year seems like it would have no effect at all on how we can perform next summer, but in reality, this is some of the most important training we can do all year.
Winter training is about building a foundation. From now until the end of January my goal is to build endurance and strength, while fine tuning my form. Right now there’s no pressure for me to be at my peak fitness, so I’m able to slow down the training, work on drills (e.g. single leg on the bike, or butt kicks on the run), and put in more steady miles than I would be able to tolerate when I have to add in speed work. I’m also able to spend a lot more time in the weight room doing plyometrics, core strength, and all the PT exercises that were prescribed to me last season that I rarely had time or energy to focus on.
