Chet's Corner: More Heart Rate Monitor Fun

Featurechetscorner_1_4_9

I promised a zumo 550 post today but I got a follow-up question about the Heart Rate Monitor on the Edge and Forerunner 305 products from Larry.  I am going to answer Larry's question below and there's also a few zumo 550 nuggets after that.  Don't worry... I didn't forget about you guys.

Q: Hi Chet,

Its me again. As I said in my last email. I was getting ready to purchase the 305HR+Cadence Sensor.

I also run and would like to use a HR monitor like the Forunner 305. Then I thought why am I buying another HR monitor if I have it with the Edge 305HR.

Can I buy just one of these units to use in both sports. Probably not a good marketing idea, but i had to ask.

Larry

A: Larry, a question like this deserves a very simple answer.  Here goes:  The Heart Rate Monitor and the Cadence Sensors for the 305 devices work on both the Forerunner 305 and the Edge 305.  They are completely universal on compatible Garmin products.  They can also be used at the same time.  So if you already have an Edge 305 with Heart Rate Monitor, then all you would need would be the Forerunner 305 and the Cadence sensor.  Simple as that.

Here are a few easy zumo 550 questions that have been asked lately as well:

Q: Does the zumo 550 have an audio jack, or do you just connect via bluetooth?

A: The zumo 550 mount (both automotive and motorcycle) has an audio output jack and a microphone input jack.  Audio can be sent out using those or through Bluetooth.

Q: Chet,  is there a SD card capacity limitation in the Zumo 550, or it can handle any size (2MB, 4MB)?

A: Right now, the largest card that has been tested with the zumo 550 is 2GB.  Larger cards may be deemed compatible in the future.

Q: What is the capacity of the mp3 player in the zumo 550?

A: At this time, the zumo 550 can hold up to 500 mp3 files.

Okay, that's it for today but I will be back on Tuesday with more answers.  Again, if you have any questions for me, please feel free to post them in the Comments.

I have a Forerunner 205 and am now interested in the Heart Rate function. Is there any way of changing the firware load for a 305 into the 205 and then buying a Garmin Heartrate strap and be done with it. I really like th features of the 305, but can't justify buying it when I have a great 205 already.

Robert

Is it possible, using ae Edge 305 with HR to see the workout time spent in a particular HR zone?
