eTrex Vista -- More Than A Teether!

Blog_teether_jason_elenaritter1Blog_teether_jason_elenaritter2 It was just another Southern California day, sunny with no chance of rain. I couldn’t have chosen a better day to introduce my 9 month old daughter to the wonders of hiking in the great outdoors. After a few miles and some significant elevation gain we made it to the pinnacle of our hike, an amazing view of Clevenger Canyon. My eTrex has been submerged underwater and blasted with sand but yet seems to survive everything that is thrown at it, even a child’s keen interest! I will always remember this very first adventure of ours; I look forward to many more adventures with my daughter and my Garmin.

On A Hog and On The Trail

Blog_emap_on_hog Blog_my_60csx I currently own 2 Garmin devices. My first is a Garmin eMap.  I mainly use it when going on road trips on my Harley-Davidson V-Rod.  I set the GPS resolution so that I can see 1/3 to 1/2 mile ahead.  This helps me judge the upcoming curves in the road and I can adjust my speed accordingly.  I also load the eMap with Geocaching waypoints so I can do a little Geocaching along the way.  It may be an old unit, but it still has a lot of life.

My second GPS is the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx.  I really really like this unit.  I sold my 60CS so I could buy a unit with removable memory.  I got that and a lot more.  On a recent Geocaching trip, I covered 1200 miles in 3 days and located 65 Geocaches with my 60CSx.  I connected my GPS to a laptop, turned on the auto routing, and it could not have been any easier.  This unit was everything I could have wanted from a GPS.

Geocaching With The Family

Blog_danigeocaching2 We've been geocaching since Christmas 2005 when I received a Garmin eTrex as a present. Still not sure what I was getting into, I convinced my 7-year-old daughter to go out with me a few times and we were really enjoying it. One day, my wife also went with us and was immediately hooked! We even had to change our name on the geo-caching Web site so that it would reflect that we all go out as a team. Even our 20-month old goes out with us now. We put a long strap on the GPS and she likes to carry it around her neck.

When we get to the location and start looking around for the cache, we always ask the youngest "Where is it?" and she'll look around, bending over, grabbing things, etc. She'll always look back at us, lift her arms and shoulders up and give us that "I don't know!" expression. But she always goes with us, we enjoy being TheLteam.

It's a Group Sport

Blogwanna_go_beginning_and_april_06 I started caching with a borrowed Garmin and knew I was hooked on the sport.  Eventually I was able to get another unit from that other company.  I cached with it for about two years.  This year I was able to get an eTrex Legend C and have come back to the manufacturer (Garmin) that started all this fun for me.  Some friendly folks started a group to meet on Wednesdays and we've visited several states and some great locations.  From Earthcaches, to waterfalls, to scavenger hunts, we're busy having fun hiking, having great pot-luck tailgate lunches, and seeing some great places we'd never have seen without geocaching.  As a teacher, I've also incorporated the technology into my classroom, teaching latitude and longitude with my GPS, and encouraging a new generation of interest.  Were you afraid that geocaching was a solitary "sport"?  The sport is only as solitary as you want it to be, and the "Wanna go?" group likes to have a fun time getting together to do caches.
